Tenney Highlights Support for 2nd Amendment, Gun Rights Legislation
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) today highlighted her support for the Second Amendment and her recent cosponsorship of several critical pieces of legislation to protect the rights of America’s legal gun owners.
“I am a staunch defender of our Second Amendment and have been throughout my time representing upstate New York. The right to keep and bear arms is sacred, and I am firmly committed to working with my colleagues to protect it for generations to come. Strong defense of the Second Amendment is more important than ever in the face of an unprecedented assault from those on the Left who want to legislate lawful gun owners out of New York,” said Tenney.
“Last summer, I led 175 of my colleagues on an important congressional amicus brief to the Supreme Court supporting efforts to overturn New York’s onerous, arbitrary, and unconstitutional concealed carry restrictions. Recently, I have cosponsored legislation to stop the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) from compiling an illegal database of legal gun owners and to prohibit federal contracts from going to organizations that discriminate against firearms providers solely because they are engaged in legal firearms or ammunition sales,” Tenney continued.
“Now, more than ever, support for the Second Amendment is crucial. While I support targeted efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, I stand strongly against efforts by gun-grabbers to strip law-abiding Americans of their constitutional rights,” Tenney concluded.
Tenney is a recent original cosponsor of the No REGISTRY Rights Act to bar the government from compiling a federal firearms registry after reports surfaced showing that the ATF had begun compiling a database. Before the introduction of this legislation, the congresswoman played an active role in providing oversight of the ATF, joining multiple letters to the agency demanding full disclosure of ATF gun owner data collection practices. These letters ultimately disclosed the ATF’s collection of this personal information in violation of laws that prohibit federal gun registries.
She is also an original cosponsor of the Firearms Industry Nondiscrimination Act to protect firearms providers from discrimination based solely on the fact that they are engaged in legal commerce facilitating Americans' Second Amendment rights.
This Congress, Tenney has cosponsored numerous other pieces of legislation to support the rights of gun owners. For example, she is a cosponsor of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, which would give Americans the ability to transfer their concealed carry permits between states. She is also a cosponsor of the Second Amendment Guarantee Act to override unconstitutional provisions in the SAFE Act that impede law-abiding New Yorkers from purchasing, transferring, and owning legal firearms. As a member of the New York State Assembly, Tenney was the first to introduce a bill to fully repeal disgraced former Governor Cuomo’s SAFE Act.
