Congresswoman Tenney's Statement on Report That 3.1 Million NY Voter Registrations Are Missing Critical Information
Utica, NY — Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22), founder and co-chair of the House Election Integrity Caucus, today released the following statement in response to a report released by the Public Interest Legal Foundation that found 3.1 Million New York voter registrations were missing personally identifiable information (PII), which includes Social Security numbers or drivers license numbers. This information is required by the Helping America Votes Act (HAVA) in order to promote good voter roll maintenance.
“We have known for a long time that New York lags far behind other states when it comes to practicing good voter roll maintenance, which helps to ensure that only qualified voters are eligible to vote. Now, the Public Interest Legal Foundation’s report confirms it once again. The report shows that 3.1 million New York voter registrations are missing personally identifiable information. Without this important information, there is no way for election officials to verify the identity of registrants or conduct proper voter roll maintenance when individuals move, file duplicate registrations, or pass away.
“I am calling on the Department of Justice to look into this matter immediately to ensure New York is fully compliant with HAVA’s voter registration requirements in the run-up to the 2022 election and beyond. Faith in our elections is at an all-time low because far too many jurisdictions across the country, including right here in New York, are failing to comply with even the most basic election integrity measures. The Election Integrity Caucus will continue to lead the fight to change this.”
