Congresswoman Tenney Leads Resolution Supporting Corrections Officers' Strike for Safer Conditions
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today led the entire New York Republican Delegation in introducing a resolution in support of the Corrections Officers striking for safer working conditions across New York.
Additional cosponsors of this resolution include Representatives Nick LaLota (NY-1), Michael Lawler (NY-17), Nick Langworthy (NY-23), Andrew Garbarino (NY-2), Elise Stefanik (NY-21), and Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11).
In 2022, the HALT Act was signed into law, significantly limiting correctional officers' ability to discipline inmates through the use of solitary confinement, a measure previously used to maintain safety among inmates. As a result of this disastrous legislation, attacks on correctional officers, nurses, and other staff across the state have risen by 85% since 2019. These increasingly dangerous conditions have also resulted in the number of facility personnel to drop significantly, declining from 16,305 corrections officers in 2022 to 13,886 in 2025. Earlier this year, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision attempted to cut 30% of correctional officer positions, threatening to make the job even more dangerous for our brave corrections officers.
“Corrections officers across the state have had enough of the unsafe working conditions imposed on them by Albany Democrats’ pro-criminal policies, like the HALT Act. I am outraged by Governor Hochul’s failure to prioritize their safety and well-being and her refusal to address serious concerns about staffing shortages and the effects of the HALT Act, which make every New York correctional facility even more dangerous. Enough is enough. Today, I introduced this resolution in the House to demonstrate my unwavering support for these corrections officers as they continue to fight for better working conditions,” said Congresswoman Tenney.
