Congresswoman Tenney Hosts Election Integrity Roundtable with Chief Election Officers from Around the Nation

February 28, 2023

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24), co-chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, today hosted chief election officers from around the country as well as their deputies for a roundtable discussion addressing election administration best practices. Panelists discussed what went right in their states during the 2022 election and raised a range of ideas for improving elections as we look forward to 2024.

Today’s roundtable included Howard Knapp, Executive Director of South Carolina’s Election Commission, Frank LaRose, Ohio Secretary of State, and Gabe Sterling, Chief Operating Officer in the office of the Georgia Secretary of State.

This event was held following the release last year of a comprehensive report by the Election Integrity Caucus that examined key takeaways and recommendations from the 2022 election. You can read the full report here.

“Today, as co-chair of the Election Integrity Caucus, I was honored to host chief election officials and deputies from across the country. These esteemed panelists shared with our congressional members what went right in 2022 and where we can improve as a nation moving forward. I appreciated their unique perspectives and look forward to continuing to work with them and other election officials to maintain faith in the democratic process. Together, we must always work to improve election administration and deliver secure, transparent, free, and fair elections,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

"Elections play a vital role in a free and fair society and are the cornerstone of our republic. Any successful election system strikes the right balance between security and accessibility while also ensuring the public’s trust in that system. Keeping this balance is not easy, but as the state’s election officials, it’s our job to ensure our elections are accurate, secure, accessible, and credible," said Executive Director of South Carolina’s Election Commission Howard Knapp.

"Ohio's been a national leader on election integrity. We’ve made great progress on adopting some important safeguards to keep our elections honest and accurate, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to share the Ohio model today with our federal partners and our state colleagues,” said Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

“Georgia leads the nation in election security and access, and the policies considered by the committee need to address practical, conservative proposals that guarantee secure and accessible elections for all voters. Antiquated laws prevent states from keeping their voter files current and accurate, and it is time for Congress to make necessary changes to the National Voter Registration Act to modernize election procedures,” said Chief Operating Officer for Georgia’s Secretary of State Gabriel Sterling.

With more than 60 members of Congress, the Election Integrity Caucus is the only caucus in Congress devoted solely to restoring faith in the democratic process by improving election administration. The caucus has hosted several roundtables on key election issues, including the merits of voter ID as well as discussions with state legislators across the nation on measures to strengthen election transparency, oversight, and accountability.

The Election Integrity Caucus was launched by Congresswoman Tenney and Congressman Mike Garcia in 2021 to serve as a platform for members of Congress to come together and proactively educate and inform the American people about issues related to election security, drive commonsense policy solutions to restore faith in the democratic process, and improve the administration of elections. Its goal is to ensure that Americans in every state and territory have confidence in free, fair, accurate, and transparent elections.
