Congresswoman Tenney Demands Answers from Secretary Mayorkas for his Involvement in the NY Migrant Crisis
Cleveland, NY – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today sent a letter demanding answers from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on the federal government's involvement in exacerbating the migrant crisis. In the letter, Tenney poses a series of pertinent questions to Secretary Mayorkas, seeking transparency and accountability for the actions taken by the federal government in relation to the migrant crisis.
During the Biden Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection apprehensions have exceeded 5.6 million, which is twice the total number of encounters under the Trump Administration. Since the Spring of 2022, over 100,000 of these migrants have arrived in New York City, placing a substantial burden on all New Yorkers, which may potentially result in even higher taxes or steeper cuts to essential services. According to the Empire Center, New York State will face a $9.1 billion budget deficit next year. This number does not even include the $1 billion in additional funding Governor Hochul has said the state will have to spend on the migrant crisis.
"All of New York, including NY-24, is suffering from the escalating migrant crisis that threatens the safety of our communities and strains our resources," said Congresswoman Tenney. "The Biden Administration's failure to enforce our nation's laws and secure our borders has led to unprecedented challenges, and I am working to hold this Administration accountable. Today, I am sending a letter to Secretary Mayorkas, demanding answers and transparency regarding federal involvement in migrant resettlement, vetting procedures, and the financial burden being put on taxpayers. My priority will always be to protect the well-being of our community's tax-paying residents."
