Congresswoman Tenney Co-leads Two Resolutions Condemning the Burmese Military Coup on Two-Year Anniversary

February 1, 2023

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today introduced two bipartisan resolutions today related to the 2021 coup by the Burmese military, also known as the Tatmadaw, that overthrew the duly elected civilian government in the country. Both measures condemn the Tatmadaw and hold it responsible for its violent coup and the subsequent crackdown on the freedoms of the Burmese people.

Since February 1, 2021, the Tatmadaw has held an iron grip on the country, using its power to violently oppress and control the Burmese people. Under the Tatmadaw’s control, over 10,000 Burmese have been arrested by the junta and roughly 2,000 Burmese, including children, have been killed.

H.Res.85 was introduced by Rep. Tenney alongside Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) and urges the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to immediately impose an arms embargo against the Tatmadaw to work to end the ongoing coup by the military and return control back to the nation's elected government. In the Summer of 2021, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a nonbinding arms embargo on the Tatmadaw, however countries like China and Russia have ignored this embargo and continued arming the Tatmadaw.

H.Res.86 was introduced by Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-16) and Rep. Tenney, and it recognizes the two-year anniversary of the coup and condemns the Burmese military for its violent crackdown and disregard for the Burmese people.

Following the release of these resolutions, the Congresswoman made the following statement:

“Today marks the solemn two-year anniversary of the Burmese military’s coup,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “Two years after this brutal military coup took place, it is just as important for nations across the world to stand with the people of Burma. The violations of fundamental human rights committed by the Burmese military cannot and will not be forgotten. Central New York is home to a vibrant Burmese refugee population, and I am honored to co-lead both of these resolutions today condemning the military’s coup and reiterating our strong support for democracy in Burma.”
