Congresswoman Tenney Calls Out Schumer and Jeffries’ Hypocrisy as Democrats Celebrate Their Own Government Shutdown

October 17, 2025

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-24) today called out the hypocrisy of Democrat leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, as the government shutdown enters its third week.

Democrats are keeping the government closed while demanding $1.5 trillion in new spending for their political agenda. Their proposal includes taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, climate programs overseas, and cuts to hospitals that serve rural communities. Instead of supporting the same clean, bipartisan funding bill they backed more than a dozen times under President Biden, Democrats are choosing to punish American workers and families to score political points.

“For years, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries called government shutdowns reckless and harmful to working families,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. “Now they’re celebrating one. As troops prepare to miss paychecks and airport workers face furloughs, they’re bragging that ‘every day gets better.’ Their hypocrisy is shameful.”

Tenney continued, “House Republicans already voted to reopen the government and ensure that our military, Border Patrol, and federal workers are paid. Democrats blocked that effort multiple times. They claim to want negotiations, but there is nothing to negotiate when our proposal has no partisan riders or new spending. What they really want is a secret deal that forces taxpayers to bankroll their far-left wish list.”

“Democrats say they believe in transparency, yet they want to cut backroom deals. They say they care about women and children, yet they left families without support until President Trump stepped in to restore critical nutrition programs. The double standard is stunning, and the American people see right through it.”
