Congresswoman Claudia Tenney Backs Women’s Choice in Service Act

October 6, 2021

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) today announced that she is an original cosponsor of the Women’s Choice in Service Act. This bill would amend the Military Selective Service Act to allow women to voluntarily register for the draft if they choose to do so.

This legislation was introduced by Congressman Burgess Owens (UT-04) after the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act of FY22, which included a provision requiring women between ages 18-26 to register for the selective service. The Women’s Choice in Service Act would clarify that women are not required to register for the draft but can do so if they choose. In addition to Congressman Owens, Tenney joined Reps. Michelle Steel (CA-48), Michelle Fishbach (MN-07) and Chris Stewart (UT-02) in introducing this legislation.

“I’ve heard from many constituents who have concerns regarding the provision of the NDAA requiring women to register for the draft. I share these concerns and thank Congressman Owens for taking the lead on this issue,” said Rep. Tenney. “Women make tremendous contributions as members of the Armed Forces, and I celebrate their incredible achievements and service. This legislation ensures that women have every opportunity to serve in the future but that they be given the option of making the decision to register for the draft themselves.”

“Amid Congress’ work to fund and support America’s armed services, an amendment forcing women to register for the draft was passed with no opportunity for discussion or debate on the floor, blindsiding constituents and stakeholders in Utah’s Fourth District,” said Rep. Owens. "As a father to five daughters and grandfather of eleven girls, I believe that women should not be forced to serve, but rather celebrated for their heroic contributions to our country's military."
