Congresswoman Claudia Tenney Announces Legislation to Invest in Local Memorials
Cortland, NY - Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) today joined local elected officials as well as veterans groups at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Cortland to underscore the need for repairs at the site. Tenney highlighted bipartisan legislation she introduced in Congress, the Remembering Our Local Heroes Act, to help communities build and maintain local memorials.
"Preserving the memories and legacies of those who have fought for and defended this great Nation is so vitally important. Communities throughout upstate New York, including those right here in Cortland County, have memorials dedicated to local heroes. But far too often localities and organizations struggle to fund and maintain these sites," said Congresswoman Tenney. "I've introduced the Remembering Our Local Heroes Act to make it easier for communities like this in Cortland to support memorials that will help keep our history alive and honor those who've served."
Tenney was joined by members of the Vietnam Veterans of America New York Chapter 377, including chapter president Gary Napieracz and chapter member Gene Barnes. Also in attendance were Cortland Mayor Brian Tobin, New York State Senator Peter Oberacker, and the City of Cortland Police Chief Paul Sandy.
Congresswoman Tenney has introduced the bipartisan Remembering Our Local Heroes Act in Congress that would assist localities with the construction, maintenance, and restoration of memorials honoring fallen military members, police officers, veterans and firefighters. The legislation has been endorsed by the National Association of Police Organizations, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
