Tenney Pushes UK to Declare IRGC Terror Group
Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., is leading a bipartisan effort urging the United Kingdom to officially declare Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization as pressure mounts on Western allies to crack down on Tehran.
In a Wednesday post on X, Tenney said she joined Reps. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., and Brad Sherman, D-Calif., in sending a letter calling on the U.K. government to "officially proscribe" the IRGC and intensify pressure on Iran's regime.
"The IRGC funds terror groups, threatens the West, and crushes dissent at home," Tenney wrote. "The free world should be united against this regime."
"I joined @RepMikeLawler and @BradSherman in leading a letter urging the UK to officially proscribe the IRGC as a terrorist organization and increase pressure on Iran's regime," she added.
The push comes as Iran faces growing scrutiny over its support for terror proxies including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis, as well as alleged plots targeting Americans and U.S. allies.
President Donald Trump designated the IRGC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization during his first term, citing its role in exporting terrorism across the Middle East and backing extremist groups hostile to the United States and Israel.
The lawmakers' letter urges the U.K. to join the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union in increasing pressure on the Iranian regime and the IRGC.
The letter also cites growing evidence of Iranian-backed hostile activity across Europe and the U.K., including alleged ties to antisemitic firebombings, cyber operations, assassination plots, and intimidation campaigns targeting dissidents and critics of Tehran.
In a press release, Tenney called the IRGC "one of the world's most dangerous terrorist organizations."
"The Iranian regime continues to export terrorism, threaten our allies and brutally suppress its own people through the IRGC and its proxy networks," she said.
Sherman warned in the release that every day Britain delays action is "another day that the IRGC evades the full impact of our nations' combined sanctions." Lawler added that the U.K. should move "without further delay" and stand with Iranian protesters.
The American Jewish Committee also backed the effort, with CEO Ted Deutch saying in a statement that the IRGC poses "a direct and ongoing security threat" to Jewish communities in Europe and beyond.
Additional signers of the letter included Reps. Don Bacon, R-Neb.; Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla.; Buddy Carter, R-Ga.; Jim Costa, D-Calif.; Lois Frankel, D-Fla.; Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J.; Thomas Kean Jr., R-N.J.; Mike Levin, D-Calif.; Grace Meng, D-N.Y.; Dave Min, D-Calif.; Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla.; Maria Elvira Salazar, R-Fla.; Christopher Smith, R-N.J.; Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.; Shri Thanedar, D-Mich.; Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.; and Mike Carey, R-Ohio.
