CONGRESSWOMAN TENNEY REACTS TO NY LOSING A CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

April 28, 2021

WKTV -- New York will lose one seat in Congress as a result of national population shifts, according to new census data. The state’s delegation will shrink from 27 to 26. It is one of seven states losing a member of congress as a result of the 2020 census data released Monday.

One of the districts that was rumored to be on the chopping block was the 22nd District.

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, who represents the 22nd, believes with Congressman Tom Reed of the 23rd District not running again, that would help keep the 22nd intact and help other upstate districts grow.

"I think the positive part of this is that New York is only losing one seat and not two. That means we are not going to be losing that much clout in Washington." says Tenney. "Unfortunately we're not at 50 like we were in the 1960's but at least we didn't lose two.  I think that's a positive thing and hopefully we will continue to grow and bring people back to New York so we don't lose any more seats."

The loss might have been avoided if just a few dozen more people in the state had been counted. The state stands to lose more than political clout because the census also determines the distribution of $1.5 trillion in federal funding each year.
