Madison, NY –Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R-New York) commended the actions of the Madison County Board of Supervisors in response to the resolution passed to address the mislabeling of non-dairy “milk.” Currently, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations define dairy products as being from dairy animals. However, the FDA has not enforced this regulation and the liquid extracted from grains, seeds, beans or leaves of various plants are being processed and marketed as milk.

“Dairy farmers are the backbone of our rural communities and economy. Traveling across the district, I’ve listened to the problems facing our farmers and I’ve taken their concerns with me to Washington. Mislabeled imitation dairy including soy and almond milk greatly hurt our dairy farmers and I am glad Madison County has worked to address this issue,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. “In Congress, I cosponsored the DAIRY PRIDE Act and helped pass into law legislation that directs the FDA to take action against mislabeled imitation dairy foods. I was pleased to see that FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced plans to begin this process soon.”

Rep. Tenney has been a fierce advocate in Congress for our dairy farmers. She has led the charge against the negative impact of the Canadian Class 7 milk pricing scheme which was eliminated as part of the new United States, Mexico, Canada Agreement (USMCA). She is also a co-sponsor of the School Milk Nutrition Act which allows schools to offer low-fat (1%) milk to students rather than just fat-free and the WHOLE MILK Act which would allow schools to offer whole milk as an option to students.
