Today, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) announced $1,150,000 in federal funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). This funding is awarded through a grant allocated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The grant will be used by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation to continue the implementation of the GLRI.

“As the largest freshwater system in the world, the Great Lakes are a unique and integral part of our environment and our economy in upstate New York,” said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. “The GLRI is an important program that works to preserve and protect water quality, prevent invasive species and clean up environmentally-impaired Areas of Concern. In all, the GLRI has supported over 3,000 restoration projects, but there is still more work to be done to ensure that the ecosystem of the Great Lakes is maintained. That’s why it is vitally important that we continue to support this important initiative and continue the mission of preserving our Great Lakes. This grant will help to ensure that our state is adequately equipped to address any challenges facing the Great Lakes.”

The grant will be used by New York State to extend the GLRI, specifically Action Plan Part 2, until 2019. Funds from the grant will also be used to hire technical staff to provide program management and assistance in the execution of Lakewide Action and Management Plans.

Earlier this year, Rep. Tenney, a member of the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, called on Congressional leaders to fully fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative in Fiscal Year 2018.
