Sidney, NY—Today, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) presented a Congressional Gold Medal, the Nation’s highest civilian award, to 104 year old Frank A. Doolittle of Bainbridge, NY. At the Sidney Airport, Mr. Doolittle was honored with this award for his efforts in the United States Civil Air Patrol during World War II.

“At a pivotal time in our nation’s history, Frank dedicated himself to service here at home. It’s a distinct honor to join our community today to recognize Frank’s service and present him with this rare recognition, said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

In 1944 in the midst of World War II, Frank Doolittle volunteered to join the Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Sydney. His unit was active and often tasked with finding C-47s that went down in the area. In additional to being on call 24 hours a day, Frank taught classes ranging from navigation to meteorology three nights a week.

During World War II, members patrolled the country’s coastline from Maine to Mexico, watching for enemy submarines and potential saboteurs, while conducting search and rescue missions.

Since 1776, only 300 Congressional Gold Medals have been awarded.
